In celebration of Halloween today, we wanted to share some eye candy with you.

If you haven’t noticed already, we tend to jump around quite a bit on our Tuesday/Thursday updates. Generally, our updates center on DESIGN: what we’re currently working on or elements moving out of design and into testing. This means that you’ll get to see these new or revised design features in the (hopefully not too distant) future.

In the lead-up to our Kickstarter, there was a period of time we lovingly referred to as the “game of rampant speculation” – a window during which we revealed our game vision in parts and then allowed our burgeoning community a chance to puzzle out how those parts fit into a single whole.

To this end, we released a series of concept images – a motley collection of scenes – that we hoped would knit together like a patchwork quilt. The plan was to release the series as individual images that, when taken together, would paint a complete vision of the game.

It’s been a while since we’ve gone down this road, and we thought it might be a good idea to revisit it now that the game is further along and the vision is better realized. So, we set Art Lead Dave Greco on a mission to create a very small collection of images that immediately, viscerally, tell the viewer “THIS is the game we are building.”

I’m pleased to present the first such image. The pillar word behind this piece is CONQUEST, fulfilling the role of the Mercenary, Warlord or Monarch.

"I wanted the main character to be the most colorful, and hold the highest contrast to hold the focus,” Dave explains. “Making the piece a bit fish-eyed created a larger viewport for us to see more of the battle. Your eyes should begin with her, travel into the High-Elf army, and then come back into the piece. It took a while to really nail down a composition that worked for me and conveys the insane nature of battle. Value, color and detail of characters played into all of it.”
Stay tuned for more amazing key art, and share your thoughts about this piece with Dave on the forums.
Happy Halloween!
